Over the past few years Social networking has boomed and become an ever popular way of communicating over the internet. What started off as one or two different sites has now evolved into almost hundreds of different ones, all with unique features. Many would say that MySpace was the original Social networking site that offered used many vast features never seen before in an online community.
Social networking has become a craze that most people have followed, for some it has become an addiction, others a popularity contest, but despite what the critics say, social networking is here to stay and has become a big market for investors.
Microsoft and Facebook: To give a rough idea of what social networking is worth to an investor; the software giant microsoft bought a 1.6 percent stake in Facebook that cost them $240 million.

The main attraction of social networking sites is that they are free and easy to use. Users can setup an account and within minutes have their own online profile and be in touch with their friends. Nowadays however the biggest deciding factor on which site to use, is dependent upon what the majority of aquintances use.
One of the main areas of speculation that Social networking sites have come under fire on, is identity theft. With such sites a lot of people go into great depth on their profile about their personal details, some detailing their full names, addresses and places of work. These have become a target for identity theives and hackers, and users have been warned to become vigilant on just how much information they give out.
